Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

Summary: St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They’ve been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger. . . .
Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever.

Review: Just for the record I haven't quite finished beating myself up for not starting this series when I first heard about. I don't really know why I didn't, but I was a bit late to the party. I'm here now though and boy am I excited. The story was very different from other YA stories that I've read. Though I kind of had my eye on the bad guy at the end from the very beginning so I kinda saw the end coming, but the story itself was really good.

I liked Rose and Lissa. I think you could really see them both grow throughout the book. Rose started off as this really strong, reckless female character with an "I don't care about anything except Lissa" attitude, but at the end she really starting thinking things through. Lissa appeared to be very timid and unsure of herself, but at the end she was a much stronger character. I think Rose and Lissa were on opposite sides of the Reckless-Responsible scale, but then they found a happy middle they could camp out at.

Oh and yes I must say that I'm all for Dimitri. Mason seems like a cool guy and all, but he's all about protecting Rose. Rose doesn't need protection; she needs to learn to protect herself. Dimitri gets that and he helps teach her self-defense. I'm very curious to see where this relationship goes. 5/5
