Trigger warnings: Torture and child abuse
Synopsis: Legend meets The Giver in the harrowing second installment of The New World Series by Jennifer Wilson.
After Phoenix, a 17-year-old orphan rogue, sacrifices herself for her loved ones, her world again takes an unexpected turn. She may have forgotten her past, but it hasn't forgotten her. A war is coming and her role in it will be pivotal.
That is... if she survives.
The highly anticipated sequel to the Amazon Bestseller New World Rising, Ashes delves deep into the twisted world of the Sanctuary, weaving a tale of torture, secrets, revolution and revenge.
Review: The best way to describe New World Ashes is "convenient." We learn more about Phoenix's past and how she was able to survive for so long. She was trained as a soldier. Because, of course she was. We also find out about her connection to The Sanctuary and how that place turned her into a soldier. That's generally how these kinds of stories end up, so I wasn't disappointed in just that. The way she gets broken out of Sanctuary was also convenient. Blah blah inside man blah blah. Her time in Sanctuary does introduce us to Ryker. I don't like him, but I did appreciate how Jennifer Wilson didn't take the love triangle route that so many other authors would have.
The story was okay. It kept moving at a pretty decent clip, and we do get to see more of Sanctuary. My biggest problem with this series so far is that I'm not invested in anything. I honestly kept forgetting that Triven existed, and Mouse feels unnecessary which is especially frustrating in New World Ashes because she is supposed to be incredibly intelligent. Also, Phoenix is supposed to help unite the tribes, but she has spent no time with any of them? I want to see how she attempts to rally them together, but that's really all I'm finishing the series for.
New World Ashes is the result of second book syndrome and underwhelming characters.
