Child's Play (2019 film)

Review: I’m a fan of classic horror and Child’s Play is one of the best. The premise is that a killer is being chased by the cops, and he’s about to die. Right before he dies, he transfers his soul into a doll, and he goes on a killing spree. One of the things that made Child’s Play fascinating is how they managed to go put so much tension into the movie before they actually showed the doll, Chucky, killing anyone. That’s all I’m going to say about the original. I just wanted to mention that so you know what the original plot was and how it differs from the remake.

Now let’s talk about the remake. In the new film, there is a corporation that has made household assistants, called “Buddi,” and one of them has a broken AI. This doll gets into the hands of a teenager and madness ensues. My biggest gripe with the new movie is how funny it ended up being. It felt more like a comedy than a horror film. I’m pretty sure the writers wanted the audience to have that moment of, “It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt,” but it really didn’t work for me. The new movie was also unnecessarily gory. Every death was more than it needed to be and that was a bummer. I did like the AI element largely because we see how it took in the world around it. There are scenes where Chucky sees the teenage boy and his friends watching, and laughing, at horror movies and death. It takes this knowledge and thinks that killing is entertainment. We see another scene where the doll learns how the stabbing motion is made. It’s such an interesting aspect to the new movie. The ending of the movie was predictable, but it was still interesting to see the AI go from just taking in information, and starts to use this knowledge to harm others.

The remake of Child’s Play could have been really good if there was a bit more thought involved.
