Synopsis: Trouble is haunting Cassidy Blake . . . even more than usual.
She (plus her ghost best friend, Jacob, of course) are in Paris, where Cass's parents are filming their TV show about the world's most haunted cities. Sure, it's fun eating croissants and seeing the Eiffel Tower, but there's true ghostly danger lurking beneath Paris, in the creepy underground Catacombs.
When Cass accidentally awakens a frighteningly strong spirit, she must rely on her still-growing skills as a ghosthunter -- and turn to friends both old and new to help her unravel a mystery. But time is running out, and the spirit is only growing stronger.
And if Cass fails, the force she's unleashed could haunt the city forever.
Review: This series is so fun. In Tunnel of Bones, we follow Cassidy and Jacob as they leave Scotland behind and head to Paris for more ghostly adventures. One of my favorite things about the dynamic between Jacob and Cassidy is Jacob's ability to read Cass' mind. That allows him to make comments on the narration of the story, not just Cassidy's spoken dialogue, and I love that so much. I was listening to this as an audiobook too, and hearing his little remarks in the middle of the narration was very well done. We learn a little more about Jacob in this story as well. The ghost in Paris hits a little close to home for Jacob, but it allowed him to feel more real to the readers, rather than just being a jokey spirit who tags along with Cassidy. We see Cassidy grow more too as she learns more about what it takes to be a ghost hunter. We see her and Jacob work together and really solidify this team angle they have.
Schwab did a great job of showing this darker part of Paris to the reader. Paris is known as this romantic city, but Tunnel of Bones gave us a new perspective. We get the chance to see what happens when ghosts get stronger, and we see Cassidy really put in the leg work in regards to finding out who exactly the ghost in this story is. I loved both of these elements so much. Schwab has always been good about writing atmospheric settings, and this continues with Cassidy's books. Cassidy's dad knows French, and so does Cassidy's friend from the first book, so the language barrier isn't a big issue in Tunnel of Bones. I do wonder if this series is going to stay set in Europe, or if they're going to expand to other areas. And will there be a moment when Cassidy is stuck because she doesn't know other languages? I'm a language nerd, so I want this element to be explored more, but that could just be me.
Fun second installment in this ghost hunting series.
