A Prince on Paper by Alyssa Cole

Synopsis: The Reluctant Royals series returns with a good girl searching for the life that’s not too big, and not too small, and the bad boy prince who might be just right for her…
Nya Jerami fled Thesolo for the glitz and glamour of NYC but discovered that her Prince Charming only exists in her virtual dating games. When Nya returns home for a royal wedding, she accidentally finds herself up close and personal—in bed—with the real-life celebrity prince who she loves to hate.

For Johan von Braustein, the red-headed step-prince of Liechtienbourg, acting as paparazzi bait is a ruse that protects his brother—the heir to the throne—and his own heart. When a royal referendum threatens his brother’s future, a fake engagement is the perfect way to keep the cameras on him.

Nya and Johan both have good reasons to avoid love, but as desires are laid bare behind palace doors, they must decide if their fake romance will lead to a happily-ever-after.

Review: A Prince on Paper is, hands down, my favorite book in the Reluctant Royals series. I saw so much of myself in Nya, and Alyssa did a great job of exploring how an introvert might handle relationships. Nya is a nerd and spends so much of her time playing dating visual novels. This, and her poor past relationships, gives her a very narrow view of sex and dating. Nya also has to deal with her manipulative father still trying to control her from prison. Johan was a fun character to get to know. He is definitely a playboy character, but he has a lot of internal struggles too. Not to mention that he is having a hard time understanding his younger sibling.

One thing I loved is the familiarity Nya and Johan had with each other. With Naledi/Thabiso and Portia/Tav, we see the characters meet and build a relationship. With Johan and Nya, they already know each other and have a complicated relationship already. Watching them deal with preconceived notions and build on top of it was refreshing. My biggest worry was that Nya’s dating games weren’t going to actually play a part in the story. Some chapters open with her playing one of these games. That’s fine, but I was wanting there to be a point to them, aside from just casual references. Thankfully, Alyssa was able to tie Nya’s games into the overall story very nicely.

Great conclusion to a fun romance trilogy.
