Aquicorn Cove by Katie O'Neill

Synopsis: When Lana and her father return to their seaside hometown to help clear the debris of a storm, the last thing she expects is to discover a colony of Aquicorns—magical seahorse-like residents of the coral reef. As she explores the damaged town and the fabled undersea palace, Lana learns that while she cannot always count on adults to be the guardians she needs, she herself is capable of finding the strength to protect both the ocean, and her own happiness.

Review: Katie O’Neill is the queen of wholesome graphic novels. Aquicorn Cove is a cute story about a girl named Lana who goes to an island she used to live on and help her aunt with natural disaster recovery. Lana and Mae, the aunt, have a sweet relationship but they both have to deal with the heaviness of losing Lana’s mother. We see flashbacks from Lana and Mae as they work on the island. One flashback we see is when Mae goes into the water and finds Aquicorn Cove, an underwater civilization for sea creatures. Lana gets to experience a bit of this world when she finds an injured seahorse and takes it in for recovery. After another storm hits, and Mae is swept away, Lana tries to find her missing aunt.

Aquicorn Cove hits a lot of topics in a beautiful way. There’s loss and recovery, emotional and physical. There are also environmental lessons to be learned as Mae has to understand the damage being done to the reef near her island. This is a sore spot between her and one of the sea creatures, but they learn how to compromise and work through the issue.

Very short, but very cute story with Katie O’Neill’s charm.
