What Remains of Edith Finch (Game Review)

What Remains of Edith Finch is a short, narrative heavy game that follows a character as they explore an old family house. As you play the game, you find various rooms and passageways so you can see every inch of this house. As you enter rooms of family members, you come across journals and letters that give you insight into their lives. This takes the game from the current day and into a past time where you get to play through the memories of these family members. Describing this game is very difficult. When people think of video games, they often think of RPGs or shooters, or platformers like the Mario franchise. What Remains of Edith Finch stands out because it doesn't really fall into any of these traditional definitions. You just wander around a house and see what secrets it has to offer.

The only story you have is that everyone in your family has died in odd ways, and their deaths are all connected to this house. There's nothing particularly scary about this game. There aren't spooky monsters waiting to come out and kill you. The game is about exploring, and learning more about your family. It's interesting getting to see what happened to past family members, but you don't have to see all of the backstories. I tried to find as many as I could, but I definitely missed a few. I don't know if any of these are required, or if you can just navigate around the house without doing any of them.

If you like games that are fully driven by the story, then What Remains of Edith Finch is a good time. It doesn't really have any replay value though. Even though I know I missed stuff, I don't want to go back and replay it. I can always watch playthroughs on YouTube or Twitch. If you have a service like Game Pass, then I would see if it is on there so you don't have to put money into the game itself.
